Elliott looked forward to his soccer games. He loved getting together with the other guys on his team, the Strikers. He enjoyed practicing his fancy footwork with Terrence, defending with Michael, and trying to score on Wyatt. They were a good group and always had a good time. On the weekends, the games were at the park across from Elliott’s house, and the rest of the time, they played on another field. Elliott called them “road trips” that he and Dad would drive to. Elliott enjoyed traveling to the games with Dad, because they could talk about guy stuff. You know, outer space, sports, cowboys, cars. Elliott enjoyed the “alone time” with just Dad. Dad did, too.
They got the schedule about a week ahead of time, and when it came in, Dad would check the map to see where the game was. This week, Dad realized that the game was a long way away.
Elliott asked, “How far is it?”
Dad checked the computer. “It’s thirty miles there and back, Elliott,” he said. “It’s probably going to take about forty-five minutes to get there.” Dad reminded Elliott to come armed with lots to talk about, since this would be a long trip. “We’ll be able to talk and talk and talk,” Dad said with a smile.
Elliott started to think of things that he and Dad could discuss on the journey. Then something occurred to him. He asked, “Remember the last time we were going to a game and you talked about our car’s efficiency? What did that mean again?”
Dad explained that efficiency meant how far your car could go on a tank of gas. “And our old car is not that efficient, I’m afraid.”
Elliott had more questions. “Dad? Does the car use more gas if there is more stuff in it?”
Dad said it might but not much.
“So we’d use almost the same amount of gas for just the two of us to get to the game or if the car was full of people?” Elliott asked.
Dad had a pretty good idea of what Elliott was thinking. “But what about our alone time?” Dad asked.
Elliott replied, “I think I can sacrifice a little you-and-me time for the sake of the planet, Dad.” Elliott picked up the phone and started dialing with a big smile.
